Do You know the condition of Your art treasures?

It is a good idea to check the condition of an artwork from time to time, even when there are no apparent signs of damage. A condition assessment is useful when planning and scheduling art conservation measures. A condition survey is a preventative measure.

In a condition assessment, a conservator who is a specialist in caring for works of art inspects the piece. The conservator is able to determine the work’s general condition and the urgency of any possible conservation measures.

The condition assessment may take place in either the customer’s own premises or in John Nurminen Prima’s conservation studio. The inspection visit is easier to plan if the customer gives John Nurminen Prima the number of artworks involved and all the data relating to them.

Do You need expert help with an inventory or valuation?

The purpose of an art inventory is to establish which works the customer owns, where they are located and in what condition they are. Inventory is part of managing an art collection. Once the inventory is complete, it is easy to plan and schedule any maintenance procedures for individual works or the whole collection.

The inventory is carried out in the locations of the works of art. The conservator photographs and inspects the works. The inspection reviews the data relating to the works as well as the measurements in more detail, charts the general condition and the urgency of any maintenance or conservation work. The current value of the work of art forms part of the inventory data. Concise data on each individual work of art is given in the form of a pictorial report. If an artwork is loaned out or transferred, it is worth updating the records, in order to keep the information on the collection up-to-date.

The inventory is easier to plan if the customer gives John Nurminen Prima the number of artworks involved, more detailed data on the works as well as the locations.

How can You preserve work of art for future generations?

Works of art are sensitive to fluctuations in conditions and require the correct handling. The right temperature, a clean atmosphere and the lowest possible lighting all contribute to keeping a work of art in good condition. It is worth avoiding handling an artwork.

Conservators are experts in the care of artworks. It is a good idea to have the condition of an artwork checked from time to time. After a condition assessment any maintenance or conservation work can be planned.

Damage to a work of art may be natural ageing or it may be mechanical damage caused by an accident. If an object has become wet, it requires urgent attention.

The conservation work is planned on the basis of the data on the artwork supplied by the customer and the condition assessment made by the conservator.
